Over 1,500 adaptive training sessions and a support community: how FUIB helps veterans return to active life

The [Extra]ordinary project, created within the framework of the veterans’ integration platform “Live towards” from FUIB, continues to help defenders recover through sports. Over the 8 months of the project’s activity, more than 1,500 adaptive training sessions were conducted for veterans with various types of injuries, traumas, and amputations.

Adaptive sports are becoming an important part of returning to active civilian life. They help not only maintain physical fitness, but also restore self-confidence, find new hobbies, and build a circle of support among people with similar experiences.

From the first training to new opportunities

[Extra]ordinary is a project launched on October 8, 2025, designed to help veterans open a new chapter in their lives through movement, sports, and new opportunities. The initiative is implemented within the framework of the “Live towards” platform from FUIB in partnership with the U+ System prosthetics and rehabilitation center.

During the existence of the program, participants have tried themselves in more than 30 sports. The most popular are functional and strength training, which help restore physical abilities, strengthen endurance and gradually return to an active lifestyle. Veterans also choose cardio training, stretching, tennis, fencing, paddle and other sports adapted to the individual needs and physical capabilities of each participant.

Sport that unites

One of the most important results of the project was not only hundreds of hours of training, but also the formed community. Veterans and veterans have united around adaptive sports, who support each other, share their experiences, motivate them to continue training and together open new opportunities for development after injuries.

"At adaptive training, people with similar experience gather. Here you can chat with other veterans, find support, feel like a part of the community and develop together and open up new opportunities for yourself," veteran Vadym Shynkovy, a participant in the program, shares his impressions.

The program is expanding

Currently, training is taking place in Kyiv, Odessa, Lviv, and Ternopil regions. However, veterans from any corner of Ukraine can enroll in the program. In the future, the project plans to expand the geography of training according to the needs of participants so that as many defenders as possible have access to adaptive sports and a support community.
