On Monday, 22 January, the American stock market went down reacting to the situation with the US government shutdown. Since 1978, the US Federal Government has already been shut down 18 times. On Monday evening, US President Donald Trump signed the law on extending financing for the US Government operation just for two weeks – until 8 February. This news had a positive impact, and the US stock indices set new historical record-highs again. Despite the fact that the shutdown’s impact on the stock market was limited, it eliminated the element of uncertainty and let investors focus on preliminary data on the US GDP growth and corporate reports which turned out to be rather strong.
